DUKE BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE Opera in one act op. 11 Sz 48 New production, in Hungarian, with German and English subtitles. Peter Eoetvoes, Conductor Johan Simons, Stage director and sets Thomas Woerdehoff, Dramaturgy With: Falk Struckmann, Duke Bluebeard Michelle DeYoung, Judith Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus Vienna Philharmonic Text by Bela Balazs after a fairy-tale by Charles Perrault Four Pieces for Orchestra op. 12 Sz 51 Cantata profana - The Nine Enchanted Stags. for tenor, baritone, double chorus and orchestra, Sz 94. Text after Romanian ballads. It is one of the darkest love stories in all of literature, the Baroque fairy-tale of Duke Bluebeard from Charles Perrault's collection Contes de ma more l'oye. Innumerable poets, composers and film directors have adapted the fable - the secret of the wife-slaying nobleman provided the plot for plays, operettas and saturnine allegories. For Bela Bartok's only opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, the Hungarian man of letters and cineaste Bela Balasz wrote a libretto in 1911 that is full of loss, hopelessness and fear of love. Shortly before he finished the score, Bartok began composing the piano version of his Four Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 12, in which he used a similar tone as for Bluebeard - at times, the Pieces for Orchestra seem like an echo of the opera. Finally, in his great choral work Cantata profana, finished in 1930, Bela Bartok wrote a passionate ode to the metamorphoses of life. The Nine Enchanted Stags, as the subtitle goes, is based on Romanian Christmas carols: nine brothers go hunting until they are turned into stags when crossing a bridge. Director Johan Simons' three-part evening of music by Bartok reflects upon human "identity, projections, traumata and self-invention," which to him are the most important components of fairy-tales. Including modern ones. Transfer to the hotel. Thursday, August 7th Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the Mirabell place in the city. Visit of the Schrannenmarkt (farmers market) in front of the Andre church, where you will be able to enjoy a lunch of your choice. You will visit the Mirabell palace, Mirabell garden, dwarf garden and baroque museum, University Mozarteum, the Mozart residence, Holy Trinity church, Loreto church (with the possible visit of the "Loreto-Kindl"=little ivory-made Jesus) and the St. Sebastian church. Some free time and transfer to your hotel to freshen up. In the afternoon at 4:00pm enjoy a concert at the Mirabell castle church where works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin and Brahms will be performed. After the concert enjoy a dinner at the restaurant "Sacher Grill". After the dinner transfer to the hotel. Friday, August 8th Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the "old city". Ride in a horse-drawn carriage around town. Continue your tour of the city with visits of the Residenz State Rooms (former official chambers of the Salzburg prince archbishops). Take a wonderful guided one hour tour through the Salzburg Residenz with a welcome drink and a Mozart chocolate (if applicable). The tour is followed by a short concert exclusively played for your group. Continue to the Salzburg Festival halls building, Pferdeschwemme, summer riding school building, toy museum and musical instruments, Blasius church, Trachtenmuseum (traditional costumes museum) and the museum Carolino Augusteum. For lunch we recommend the famous Bosna (sausages) in the Getreidegasse. Ride the Moenchsberg elevator to one of the most beautiful vantage points of the city. Visit the Museum of Modern Art with it's current "special exhibition". Take a nice short walk on the Moenchsberg to Muelln (part of the city) and visit of the Muellner church. Visit of the Augustiner brewery (a monastery brewery since 1621), where you will be able to enjoy a dinner of your choice. We recommend to choose from the elaborate buffet. Very good is the hot Leberkaese with cut white radish and fresh bread. Transfer to the hotel to freshen up. In the evening at 8:30pm, enjoy the Opera: "KONTENT SCIARRINO" -an event of the Salzburg Festival- at the "Kollegienkirche" (Collegiate church). The Opera "Luci mie traditrici" "Luci mie traditrici", together with "Amore e Psyche", "Perseo e Andromeda" and "Lohengrin", is one of the highly successful operas by Salvatore Sciarrino. The plot of this chamber opera is based on the authentic story of the Renaissance composer Gesualdo who had his wife murdered out of jealousy. The theme of the work is the transience of love. On one day's morning a man and his wife, Count and Countess, invoke their eternal love. At mid-day the Countess is gripped by the passion for a guest to whom she gives herself away. In the evening the Count forgives her and she returns. In the night, as she opens the curtain to her bed in the presence of her husband, she sees on it the body of her lover. The Count then kills her, and, stabbed by her husband's dagger, she collapses over her murdered lover. For this love story of a single day Sciarrino creates a form of music which expresses the finest nuances of feeling of the human soul. In parallel to the condensing of time of the original drama, the language of the music drama appears as a crystallization of the feelings of love. The language of the lovers sounds like a continuing implosion in the narrowness of their intimacy. In this work the language of passion gives birth to a kind of singing hitherto unknown to us. Transfer to the hotel. Saturday, August 9th Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Hellbrunn palace. Visit of the castle Hellbrunn and it's beautiful water gardens. Hellbrunn is one of the finest examples of mannerist architecture with it's world-famous trick fountains. You will take a guided tour.
